New GastroPub in Kihei
Shearwater Tavern is located in the Azeka’s Mall, Mauka side (Volcano side) of So. Kihei Rd, in the old Stella Blues location. Next to Fork and Salad.
We stopped into Shearwater Tavern the week after it opened. Already this long awaited new Restaurant by D.K. Kodama, was showing the signs of being just as popular as his Sansei Seafood and Sushi Restaurants. D. K Kodama himself was in house, making sure all was going well.
The first thing that came to mind upon entering, was a nice, warm feeling. The builders used a lot of nice fresh wood on the walls and ceiling. Not sure what type.
We almost didn’t get a table, and then 3 spots opened up for us at the Bar. We ordered several Appetizers, which were half off for Happy Hour, yea! Happy Hour at Shearwater Tavern is currently from 5- 6 PM. Not being a Beer person, my drinks were not on special, however they were very good and I loved the atmosphere, live Hawaiian Music and Eclectic Menu.
I wondered about where they got their name, Shearwater Tavern and found a link on their website. DK says:
“The Wedge-tailed Shearwater – ‘Ua‘u Kani – is the bird after which our restaurant is named. These native Hawaiian birds live at sea and come to shore only to nest. They burrow in sand, grass, soil or rocky crevices and both parents raise their single yearly offspring. They return to the same burrow year after year. We hope our guests find a home here at our restaurant and return again and again to experience Shearwater’s ‘ohana (family) spirit.”
Shearwater Tavern’s website also boasts:
“Shearwater Tavern is a fun, casual neighborhood gathering place to share great food and drinks. Our chefs source the freshest seasonal products from our local Maui farmers, ranchers and fishermen so we can serve you local first, organic, and sustainable foods.”
Overall i have to agree. A while back i googled what a GastroPub was, they are “Pubs that specializes in high quality food”, or “fine foods served in a casual atmosphere’…
I am hearing good reviews from the locals, I think you will find it well worth a stop in, if you are in the neighborhood.
